Can boys with long hair to go the salon?

Hi. I'm a boy with long hair. I started growing my hair out about a year ago, and it is finally reaching my shoulders. (I don't mind expressing my feminine side.)

My mom has always encouraged me to push what some people consider gender boundaries.Yesterday, when I was blowdrying my hair, she asked me if I would like to visit her stylist at the salon. Right now, my hair is very straight and a dark blonde color. She says I should consider having my hair layered and highlighted.

She called and scheduled me an appointment for this coming Tuesday. I'm also having a facial. I've never had these services before... and it will be my first time in a salon. I'm excited, but a little nervous. What should I expect?

I love going to the salon. Make sure you take a good book...or a magazine you like. Most of the magazines at a salon are like hairstyle guides...people...instyle...cosmopolitan...

My hair is just like yours...real straight...this makes the process go longer, but if your hair is thick, and you dont have an experienced colourist on your hair, you are going to be there for a while. Mine used to take 3 or 4 hours for the highlights---mind--I used to get colouring, and a couple colours of highlights, but that shouldnt make a difference.

Assuming you are getting foils, (which cost more, but are totally worth it), dont be concerned when they pull your hair firmly. They only do this for 2 reasons--to get the proper hair, and to "paint" the right parts.

If you are cap highlighting, it hurts a little bit.

Adding some layers is a great idea...it really gives your hair personality and movement. Get something that frames your face.

If you are like me, and have a round face, you want to frame it, so make sure there are face framing layers.

Make sure you specify the stylist does not cut the layers too short on top, unless you are a fan of a fanned mullet.

The big challenge with poker straight hair, is the fact that it loses style real easy. When they are blowing your hair out, watch what tools they use, and how they do it. This will help you to achieve the same style at home. If they use a product, and you like the results--ask them what the product they are using. They always use the products they have in stock at the salon. Keep in mind though--salon products are VERY expensive....if you have a budget--and they use something like--medium hold mousse--go to the drug store and buy a similar product...

For my straight hair, I like to use volumizing products like Dove and Sunsilk....cheap, (3-5$), and work great!

The facial may be a little different--it will be relaxing...and nice...it depends on what kind of facial they are giving you, as well...

If you have oily skin, they will give you something with seaweed in it. They may give you a steam facial, they may give you a cream facial.

Keep in mind, after facials, your skin may break out---(which is why, you dont get a facial the day before a big event). It is your skin saying "thank you"...it is deep cleaning the pores, and sometimes, brings toxins up to the surface. Unless you have any allergies though, you wont get a rash. I personally have only ever broken out once...so its nothing to be scared of.

The salon itself is a friendly place. The stylist, (who cuts and styles your hair), the colourist, (who colours your hair, --may be the same person as the sylist), and the aesthetician, (who will do your facial, will likely be a different person than the stylist, or colourist), will all be friendly and very talkative. They will talk about your school, your relationships, your job, anything to make the time go by.

Have fun!

Aw don't be nervous! It'll be fun. Facials feel good and make your skin look nice and as long as you have a magazine to read while they're doing your highlights you won't be too bored.

I've seen boys with long hair go to the salon plenty of times, and if anyone is going to judge you for that, who needs them or listen to them anyway? Just be happy with who you are.

Good luck!

Don't be embarrassed. That's it. You're not the first one. Basically, if it's awkward for you, it'll be awkward for them, and if it's awkward for them, then it'll only be even more awkward for you.

If you're just a little nervous, then it's not problem. Go in, and come out 45 minutes later, hopefully a little better.

(I don't know about the facial part though...)

Congratulations! I think professionally styled long hair looks good on certain guys. Think Josh Groban, or some of the characters from Lord of the Rings. Good luck!

Just Go With the Flow - Sit back and be pampered! I've seen A LOT of men in my salons and fall instantly in love with them all. If you want to have nice long hair the ONLY way to learn how to do that is through a Salon.

A facial in my world is a treat and if you have never had any experience like that ... prepare yourself. It's not about a stranger trying to "fix you" .... it's about a professional going through a series of therapeutic massages and cleansing techniques. Take some peaceful music with you and bliss out! Pretty soon you'll find yourself craving massages!

Ok, first they will talk you through exactly what you want. It's a good idea to have a photo of the hairstyle and color you want, but if you're pretty confident that you can explain it to them, then you won't need one.

They will either sit you down and you'll get your hair washed and conditioned, or they'll spray your hair with water and then cut it before washing it. The latter is more likely because you're having it colored and it might not make sense to them to wash it twice.

The highlighting will be the hardest part. It's painful. They use a tight cap over your head and pull strands of your hair through to colour them. Or they'll use the foil method, where they wrap strands of your hair in foil. Either way, for a first time getting your hair coloured, it will burn a little. To speed it up, they might put you under a special heater.

This part probably won't take that long, and then they'll wash it and condition it (really relaxing and you get a mini head massage- I always almost fall asleep) and then they blowdry it for you. It'll be in front of a mirror so they can show you how to style it yourself.

Just keep remembering that even if it hurts, it's only for a very short time and then it's gonna look awesome. And trust me, the second time you get it done, it won't be half as bad.

Facial should be relaxing though.
