How can i avoid pulling beard hairs while combing?

i have a 2-1/2-inch-long goatee and have very thick facial hair. the longer it gets, the easier it is to pull out hairs while i am combing it. it's starting to thin out at the end and i want to stop this madness before it starts to get all scraggly.

i recently bought hair detangler thinking it would help, but i still seem to pull out about 3-4 hairs per combing... and long ones, too.

i use a standard comb, one side with thin teeth, the other wide teeth. i use only the wide tooth side while combing.

someone plz help me save my beard.

fwiw, here are all the things that go into my beard care:

- aussie deep conditioner

- hair detangler

- occasional hot oil treatment (haven't used it for a few months, though)

- combing once per day after showering
