How did I have a red headed baby?

I have light brown hair with green eyes and fair skin. MY FATHER'S hair is brown although his facial hair would have golden little blond and orange hairs. I am Italian/Ecuadorian-American. My son's father has dark brown hair with brown eyes and olive skin. His facial hair is mostly brown but also has randon little golden brown and orange hairs. He is Portuguese/Mexican-American. I gave birth to my first baby and he has the most beautiful bright red hair with red eyebrows and red eyelashes. His eyes are brown. His skintone a golden tan-like color. He is so unique and Im just so amazed. He's nearly two years old now and still since the day he was born I ASK MYSELF "WHERE DID THIS BEAUTIFUL RED HAIR COME FROM??? Do I or his father have long lost red headed family members? Could theyre be Irish or Scottish blood in our family lines? What does recessive genes mean? How and Why was I blessed with such a unique baby?

How did I have a red headed baby?

Hey again. Sounds like your son indeed recieved a very special gene, or set of genes that influenced this very rare phenotype. When two people have sex, and the sperm and the egg fuse, the egg becomes fertilized. Each parent provides half a stand of DNA EACH, in a process called MEIOSIS. This is how offspring recieve DNA from both of the parents. Now, what is a recessive gene? When DNA is passed on, the child recieves genes for every charcteristic from BOTH parents. There are TWO alleles ( two parts that make up ONE gene), ONE from EACH parent, so there are TWO alleles for every gene. For every pair of alleles, there is a dominant one and a recessive one. Each parent will either have a recessive allele, or a dominant allele. The dominant allele is expressed (an expressed gene is called a phenotype) as long as it is present from ONE of the parents. For example, if a gene has a recessive allele for short legs from the mother, and a dominant allele for long legs from the father, the baby will have long legs because the dominant allele, is always, well you know, dominant. The only way the child will have short legs is if BOTH parents have the recessive alleles for short legs. Now, in this case, we are talking about the recessive allele for red hair. Red hair is a very rare phenotype, because the recessive allele isn't very common, and the chances of two people having it is very rare. In your case, this is VERY rare, because not only do both of the parents have this rare allele, but neither of you express the gene. This allele was probably passed down to both of you from the past, an allele that has been passed on for centuries without expression. When a recessive gene is expressed there is a 1/4 probability of expression, unless it is sex linked. So your son beat the odds, and by chance expressed this rare gene. Genes can be passed on for a very long time without being expressed, as soon as two recessive alleles join, you never know when it will show up. This is what makes life a miracle; it is so complex and unexpected, and it is what makes everyone in the world so unique.

Even if a family member has a tad bit of redish hair, there's a chance your baby will be born with redhair. My father has dark black hair %26amp; olive skin but his mustache grows in red. I was born with bright bright red hair. Report It

How did I have a red headed baby?

Hi

recessive is called the gene that in order to express the feature that carries must be given to the baby from both the parents (Example red hair) if one parent gives to the baby the gene of blond hair and the other the red one then the baby will have blond hair because the gene of blond hair is DOMINANT and red is recessive but when both parents give arecessive gene the baby will have red hair.

Only 4% of people have the gene for red hair so it is not to frequent.

Your part-Italian father probably has a Viking in his past; either from 600 - 1200 AD, when they got around a lot, or more recently when a Swedish tourist hooked up with someone. I'd bet that's where the red hair came from. The gene has been lurking ever since.
