Why has clean-shaven men become the norm?

I don't know, to me it just seems rather femenine to no have body hair or facial hair. Women seem to be appaled by men with beards, or at least strongly prefer them without, but that is only because clean-shaven men have become the "norm".

When was it that this came about? Why are men so discouraged to wear facial hair now? Is it simply because of the literal advantages of not having facial hair? (if not taken care of, is less sanitary, but no more than the hair on your head) Or is it simply men are trying to emulate what *they* consider attractive?

I think it's because of Charles Manson. No one wanted to look like him.

I don't know, it seems these days both men and women are supposed to have hair only on the top of their heads. Any type of body hair is frowned upon.

I like a goatee, generally not a full beard, I just don't like the look that much.Depends on the guy some look better with facial hair, others look better smooth. I'm ok with hairy men though. I don't have a strong preference for hairy or smooth chests, but I laugh when I hear about a guy who shaves his chest, and don't get me started on the pubic hair. I don't think they are trying to emulate what they find attractive, men generally aren't that ambitious. At least you know how it feels now!

*Goes to shave legs for the third time this week*

It's considered normal because it's no longer seen as 'professional.' But I kinda enjoy a scruffy man. : D I don't want a boy, I want a man. LoL

Why has clean-shaven men become the norm?

Interesting question. Actually there has been evidence of shaving (bronze razors found in graves) back to at least the Bronze Age. I guess people like to vary their appearances. In celtic times the men shaved the beard but kept a moustache; in Saxon times young men were clean shaven but once you grew older %26amp; more established in the community you were expected to have a beard.

I think a lot of modern men don't wear beards because they are aging (I worked in theatre and if you want to age the male lead character by 10 yrs you give him a false beard!)
